Learning Tip of the Month
There is probably no more important activity for preparing your child to succeed as a reader than reading aloud together. Fill your story times with a variety of books. Be consistent, be patient, and watch the magic work.
Even after children learn to read by themselves, it's still important for you to read aloud together. By reading stories that are on their interest level, but beyond their reading level, you can stretch young readers' understanding and motivate them to improve their skills. |

Q: How do I know if my child needs tutoring?
There are all sorts of reasons why a child may need tutoring. Maybe a teacher or school counselor recommends it. Maybe your child's grades start to fall. Possibly he or she experiences extreme anxiety before tests and exams. If your child has been acting out, becoming a behavior problem in class, or acting reluctant to go to school, tutoring could be the answer.
Q: Is testing conducted to see where my child needs help? When you enroll your child at the Huntington Learning Center, the first thing we do is give your child a series of diagnostic tests to discover his or her abilities, pinpoint problem areas, and develop an individualized instruction program based on the test results. Then the Center Director meets privately with you to review your child's strengths and weaknesses and recommend a comprehensive, personalized program of instruction. By individually diagnosing what is keeping your child from doing his or her best and creating a program of instruction tailor-made to fit your child's needs, we are able to help students improve their skills, confidence, and motivation.
Q: My child has a learning disability. Can Huntington help?
Over the years we've worked with tens of thousands of children, all with different academic goals and problems. We have many children who either are now, or have been in Special Education programs. We have found that we have been able to help most children with learning difficulties. We understand that children with learning difficulties have special needs, but with our help they can, and often, succeed. Of course, our ability to help depends on the nature and severity of the problem. We'll be better able to determine if we can help after the evaluation. The evaluation will give us a good indication of his specific academic strengths and weaknesses.
Children with learning difficulties may suffer from a lack of focus, get easily distracted or lack organization. We'll observe your child on a one-to-one basis, and conduct observations of your child performing independent tasks. We'll have a chance to see the level at which he is comfortable, and the point at which he begins to frustrate. We'll see if he keeps on trying, or if he gives up easily. We work every day with children with learning disabilities, to help them focus, get organized, and stay on top of their studies so they don't fall behind. Our years of experience have taught us that these children learn and succeed with individualized attention.
Q: What kind of improvement can I expect to see?
At Huntington we have been helping children get better grades, raise their test scores, and improve their study skills for 25 years. And according to parents and students, we've also helped children develop a positive self-image, get motivated, and improve their self-esteem and confidence knowing they can succeed in school.

"Not only did you help D.J. bring his grades up, you also taught him such basic skills as how to get his work organized, how to be neat, how to retain what he read and how to process the information--basic skills the school system had not taught him throughout his education." - Doug P.
"Our son's whole attitude toward learning and school has changed." - The H. Family

"Our daughter's confidence level and self-worth have both improved greatly. We will never hesitate to use Huntington again if the need arises. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you." - Irina B.
"When we reviewed the [diagnostic] tests with you, so many things rang true. The problems our son was experiencing really came down to large learning gaps and a serious lack of self-esteem. Here we are five months later and the proof that your program works is evident in our son. He is so much more confident and able to communicate with others, and we still are only halfway through his program!" - Ann and Walker R.
"After talking to some of your staff several weeks ago, I was very impressed at how individualized they were--where was my daughter looking at colleges, her GPA, what type of course load she was taking at her high school. No other learning center asked any personal questions. I really felt you wanted to find the right program for her." - Rosalind V.
"My son Robbie took the SATs on October 4th. I know that from just being with your personnel, Robbie was helped as an overall student." - Deborah R.
